contractor experiences in a toxic work environment

A couple of weeks ago, I was tasked with preparing a report for a team meeting in Washington. The atmosphere was dense with tension. One of the managers started off the meeting by harshly criticizing our efforts without acknowledging the long hours we had all put in. It felt like the room was filled with anxiety, waiting for someone to get PIP'd next. It really struck me how toxic the energy was - everyone was on edge, afraid to speak up or share ideas. I completed my report and decided to stay quiet, realizing any contribution would just add fuel to unnecessary criticism. Later in the day, a colleague shared their experience of receiving negative feedback for something minor that was completely out of their control. It's frustrating to see how these environments thrive on fear, especially when a few voices can drown out the rest. I keep wondering how we can break this cycle and create a better atmosphere, but right now it feels impossible.
