Cisco does this too but anyhow - am I the only one who thinks this whole H1B crackdown is going to backfire badly? Everyone is celebrating Microsoft, Adobe, Cognizant, Infosys, Tata and others getting targeted like somehow thousands of American tech jobs are magically coming back. They aren't. These companies will just move more operations to India or wherever labor is cheaper, hire the same people overseas and probably make even more money. Wall Street might actually love it. And please stop pretending AI can suddenly replace every skilled engineer in the country. The US tech industry became what it is because it attracted talent from all over the world, not because it shut everyone out. We already watched manufacturing disappear overseas, are we seriously going to repeat the same mistake with technology?? And what about people who have been here legally for 10 or 15 years, paying taxes, raising families and waiting forever for their green cards? Now they're supposed to worry about PERM, I-140, renewals and whether their employer will even sponsor them anymore? How does any of this help American workers? Sure, investigate fraud, fix the EB1C loopholes, go after companies abusing the system and make sure salaries are fair. Nobody is defending fraud. But there's a huge difference between enforcing immigration laws and making it so difficult to hire foreign talent that companies just stop creating jobs here altogether. Also interesting how this is happening right before the midterms and somehow Amazon, Google, Meta and others seem to be getting less attention. Makes you wonder how much of this is actual policy and how much is political theater. And lets be clear, suspending parts of the green card process isnt the same as banning H1Bs anyway. So what exactly are people celebrating? Microsoft isn't going to rehire everyone it laid off, Infosys isn't suddenly going to replace its entire workforce with Americans, and skilled people aren't going to keep waiting around forever when they have other options. Ten years from now we'll probably have politicians campaigning to bring tech jobs back to America, just like they did with manufacturing. Protect American workers, absolutely, but destroying the country's ability to attract talent is not the way to do it. This could end up being a massive gift to overseas competitors, and somehow people are calling it a win.
