Berkshire Hathaway is a holding company whose subsidiaries run insurance, freight rail, utilities and energy, manufacturing, service and retailing businesses, with about 387,800 employees at December 31, 2025. Gregory E. Abel, chosen by the board in May 2025, succeeded Warren E. Buffett as CEO on January 1, 2026. Buffett signed the fiscal 2025 annual report as Chairman of the Board on February 28, 2026.

What Berkshire Hathaway does

Insurance, freight rail and utilities are the businesses the fiscal 2025 Form 10-K calls the most important. Insurance is reported in three parts. GEICO sells mainly private passenger auto policies, Berkshire Hathaway Primary Group writes mostly commercial property and casualty cover, and Berkshire Hathaway Reinsurance Group handles reinsurance. Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) runs a freight rail system in North America. Berkshire Hathaway Energy (BHE) operates regulated electric and gas utilities, natural gas pipelines and real estate brokerage. The other reportable segments are Manufacturing, Service and retailing, McLane Company, a wholesale distributor of food and non-food items, and Pilot Travel Centers. Corporate headquarters is in Omaha, Nebraska. On October 13, 2026, the parent's website linked to 70 subsidiary sites.

Where Berkshire Hathaway hires

Job openings belong to the operating companies, and each has its own base. BNSF is based in Fort Worth, Texas. GEICO is headquartered in Maryland. Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance (BHSI) is based in Boston, with offices in Australia, Canada, New Zealand and several countries in Asia and Europe. At December 31, 2025, the manufacturing businesses had non-US locations in 58 countries and the insurance businesses in 24.

BNSF Railway Company submitted 19 H-1B labor condition applications (LCAs) in calendar 2025. They name 15 worksite cities, and no city has more than 3 of those filings. Almost every 2025 filing is for a technology or analytics role. Senior Software Engineer appears 3 times in that 2025 set. Senior Data Engineer, Senior Staff Engineer and Staff Engineer appear twice each.

How Berkshire Hathaway is organized

Manufacturing is the largest employer group, with about 175,600 people at the end of 2025. Insurance had about 42,600 at the same date. Service businesses other than McLane had about 31,200, Pilot about 29,300, retailing other than Pilot about 25,400 and McLane about 24,900. BHE put its own workforce at about 24,000 in the same filing. The 10-K says the subsidiaries are run on an "unusually decentralized basis," with few shared business functions. As of February 28, 2026, Ajit Jain led insurance and Adam Johnson led consumer products, service and retailing, and both reported directly to Abel.

Workforce and hiring patterns

About 80% of employees were in the US at the end of 2025, and 19% were represented by unions. Union membership runs far higher at BNSF Railway, where about 30,000 of about 35,000 employees belonged to a union at that date. The 10-K describes a workforce spread across a wide variety of occupations. Each operating subsidiary sets its own policies for attracting and keeping staff, so pay, hiring practice and training vary from one company to the next. NetJets, for example, runs its own training programs for pilots, flight attendants and maintenance mechanics, many of them union-represented.

Good to know before you apply

  • The parent's home page had no careers link on October 13, 2026. Apply on the site of the subsidiary you want, such as GEICO or BNSF.
  • The 10-K says subsidiary policies commonly cover health insurance, retirement benefits, performance incentives, wellness programs, and training and career advancement. Details depend on the company you join.
  • Combined US workforce data based on EEOC guidelines is posted under Sustainability on the parent's website, next to annual reports and shareholder letters.
  • A railroad and an auto insurer have little in common, so note which subsidiary each discussion below comes from.
